Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Heat pump installation is supported by a UK Government’s grant, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), for people in England and Wales. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) was officially launched on 1 April 2022 as part of the strategy to reduce carbon emissions from UK homes. The scheme is scheduled to run until 2028.

BUS Grant Eligibility Requirements

The BUS is open to homeowners and owners of small business properties in England and Wales only.

To be deemed eligible for a BUS grant, property owners in England and Wales must meet the following criteria:

  • Own your property.
  • Have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
  • Currently have a fossil fuel heating system or an electric heating system without a heat pump.
  • Have a property with a maximum installation capacity up to 45kWth (kilowatt-thermal).
  • Your installer must be certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) and a member of an approved consumer code.

Understanding the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Transitioning from a traditional boiler to a low-carbon heating solution can be more cost-effective. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) offers homeowners an upfront contribution towards the cost of an energy-efficient heating system, such as an air source heat pump. If your existing heating system is aging and you're considering alternatives, exploring cleaner and more sustainable heating options is worth your time. Here’s how it works.

The new air source heat pump you choose, must:

  • Be fully replacing a fossil fuel heating system (including oil, gas, or electric boilers),
  • Heat pumps must have a seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) of at least 2.8
  • Meet the heating and hot water demands of your property,
  • Not exceed 45kWth in capacity.

How the Boiler Upgrade Scheme works

After selecting the appropriate heating system for your home (since the criteria for ground and air source heat pumps differ significantly, it's essential to gather more information before making a choice), installers will apply for the grant on your behalf and deduct it from the total cost of your heat pump. It’s that simple.

You’ll be eligible if:

You are a homeowner or small business owner. Your property is located in England or Wales. The property has an energy performance certificate (EPC) that is less than 10 years old.

Numbers at a glance:

£450 million will be allocated to the 3-year Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which is part of over £3.9 billion in new funding aimed at decarbonizing heat and buildings. An innovation fund of £60 million has been launched to simplify the installation of clean heat systems and reduce operational costs. Significant cost reductions are anticipated by 2025 as the market grows and technology advances.

Don’t miss out

You can apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme as long as funding is available, so it's advisable to submit your application whenever you're ready.
